Men in the United States will soon get the first of three major generics of erectile dysfunction (ED) drug Viagra, according to new data released Friday.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Cialis, will be sold in about one million men by 2029.
The new data from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shows that in the first year of its generic competition for Viagra, roughly one in four men in the U. will take the drug.
"With Viagra, we are seeing a huge increase in the use of this drug," said John C. Wolfe, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "While the demand has grown, men are still seeing an increase in the number of prescriptions written for Viagra."
The new data from the FDA indicates that roughly one in four men who took the drug for more than a year were either not taking the drug or who did not see any significant change in their symptoms.
Half of men who took the drug for more than a year were not using it, and half of those men who took the drug for two months or longer were not using it.
The data, which was not released Friday, shows that about 8 percent of the men who took the drug for more than four months for ED problems reported no symptoms, compared to just over 4 percent of men who took the drug for two months or longer.
The new data also shows that about a third of men taking the drug for ED problems were taking the drug at least twice during that time period, compared to about half of men who took the drug at least twice during that period.
A total of 1.8 million men in the United States took the drug in the first six months of 2020, according to the agency's website.
According to Wolfe, "we are seeing significant changes in the use of this drug."
A spokesman for the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research said the agency does not recommend prescribing Viagra for men who are taking nitrates, medicines for high blood pressure and other conditions that can cause chest pain.
The new data also shows that about one in five men who took Viagra for more than four months or longer were taking the drug at least once during that time period, compared to only about one in 10 men who took Viagra for more than four months or longer.
According to Wolfe, "there is no indication that men who take Viagra for ED have a higher risk of heart disease than do men who do not take it."
The new data also shows that about 8 percent of men who took Viagra for more than four months or longer were not taking the drug at least twice during that time period, compared to about 4 percent of men who took Viagra for more than four months or longer.
Viagra is still available in more than 1 million men, and about 1.3 million men have been treated for ED in the past year.
Viagra will be sold in about one million men by 2029, and about 1.7 million men have been treated for ED in the past year.
The company that owns the rights to Viagra says that its patent on Viagra will expire in April 2020, and that the drug's sales will be delayed for as long as April 30, 2021.
